My friend asks me were you earlier.

Can you say:

I just went to the gym

VS

I was just at the gym

What's the difference here?

My friend asks me "Where were you earlier?"

Can [STRIKE]you[/STRIKE] I say:

I just went to the gym

[STRIKE]VS[/STRIKE] or

I was just at the gym

What's the difference here?

Note my corrections above. Given that the question uses the word "earlier", I wouldn't use "just" in the reply (if you were using it to mean "a short time ago" rather than "only"). I would say "I was at the gym" - that's the most natural response to that simple question.
