Weaker than a satisfactory theoretical model, these paradigms nevertheless represent an important step in that direction from looser, implicit conceptual models. To articulate a largely implicit framework as an explicit paradigm is, of necessity, to caricature. But caricature can be instructive. Does caricature in the context mean "exaggerate"?

The first instance of "caricature" is a verb. The second is a noun.

Probably.
Does this usage carry a negative sense? Because usually to caricature something or people gives people a feeling of mocking.

When we caricature someone we exaggerate certain features or mannerisms. It's not necessary meant or received in a negative way, but it can be.
