What is the difference between "carrying out scientific research" and "engaging with scientific research"? Suppose there are three scientists named A,B,C who want to finish a scientific study X, come to forge relationships with religious communities. Carrying out the study would mean that A,B and C do and complete the study with the help from the communities, while engaging with the study would mean the commnities more actively participate the study. Am I on the right track?

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has launched a new series profiling scientists who have forged meaningful relationships with religious communities in carrying out or engaging with scientific research. From an initiative to revitalize Indigenous astronomy to an effort to highlight the overlap between the ecological and spiritual value of trees, the first five featured scientists represent a wide range of disciplines.

In the case of "engaging with", which are the major role of scientific research? Scientists or the communities? Are both equally important in the author's opinion?.
