I read a literary journal and an excerpt criticizes the moral rationality of the West:

The moral rationality of the West created a Cartesian artistic rationality that severely limited the activity of art and poetry, and for this reason, poetry, which had a very bright peak in post-Renaissance Europe, started to pass into decadence immediately after the French Revolution.

What is the "Cartesian artistic rationality" in this context? Thanks in advance.

I am no philosopher, and know Descartes from his planes and him walking into a bar in the famous joke.

I imagine the author means something about how the West developed into ways of thinking that were more logical than artistic.
of or pertaining to Descartes, his mathematical methods, or his philosophy, esp. with regard to its emphasis on logical analysis and its mechanistic interpretation of physical nature.

The author is saying that the prevailing rationalism ushered in by Descartes had a limiting effect on artistic activity.
