When I red the book, I returned it to the library at once.

OR

When I red the book, I checked it in at once.( Is it possible?)

The library allowes you to check out three books at a time.

First, "read" and "allows". Each of your examples is OK.

In the UK, we don't use "check out". We usually say "borrow".............

"We can borrow three books at a time from the library."

"We must remember to return them on time."

Maybe "checking in and out" is US usage.

Thanks you for help:up:!

In my experience, we would "check out" a book, but "return" it.
