"Children are expected to be able to swim 200 meters - of which at least 50 meters on their back- after first diving

into the deep end"

I think the red phrase is not grammatical and should be changed into 'at least 50 meters of which on their back'.

Am I right? - or the hyphens are doing something in that sentence?

"Children are expected to be able to swim 200 meters - of which at least 50 meters are on their back - after first diving into the deep end"

The hyphens only draw attention to the odd phrase. Your re-write is much better. You could also correct by inserting an "are." "...at least 50 meters are on..."

Perhaps best is to simply say " - at least 50 meters on their backs - "
