As an NES but not a teacher, I would have no problem with the prepositions used.

I would say "Enclosed is cheque no XXX, in the amount of £XXX, in payment of the above account/invoice.
 
I would say "Enclosed is cheque no XXX, in the amount of £XXX, as the xth payment of the above account/invoice.

Minor tweak, per OP.
