[General] cross the street vs cross the road

Which of the sentences below is correct? Thank you.

1. He helped an old lady cross the street in Taipei yesterday.
2. He helped an old lady cross the road in Taipei yesterday.

I'm quite sure that #1 is correct. I need to make sure whether #2 is also correct.
 
They mean the same. It makes no difference whether you use road or street.
