Dear teachers,

Would you tell me your opinion about the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

He was riding his luck and with each pass the total stake doubled. (J. London, “The Road”)

If you are lucky at first, don’t press your luck.

crowd (press, push, ride) one’s luck = fly in the face of fortune; stretch one’s luck

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V

Dear teachers,

Would you tell me your opinion about the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

He was riding his luck and with each pass the total stake doubled. (J. London, “The Road”) = He was having good luck on a continuous basis, and he was taking advantage of it by continuing to bet (and win)

If you are lucky at first, don’t press your luck.

crowd (press, push, ride) one’s luck = fly in the face of fortune; stretch one’s luck :tick:

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V

Hi charliedeut,

Thank you for your prompt reply as well as for your assistance.

Here is my extemporize, probably interpretation of the first sentence from my original post which is probably crooked to your mind.

He was running a risk to travel without a ticket (to steal a ride) but with every passing station he was exposed to a double growing danger to be caught.

I recommend you to read "Bulls" by J. London again.

Hi Vil,

I will certainly read it (for the first time) as soon as I get a chance.
