A: WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR?

B: MINE? I DON'T HAVE ONE.

A: YOU HAVEN'T DECLARED?

B: I DON'T GO TO SCHOOL.

a: YOU'RE KIDDING.

What is the meaning of "you haven't declared"

"Declare" means to annouce, to let people know.

When talking about university "declare your major" means to decide what your major will be, and to tell the university. Before you have declared your major, you can study different subjects to help you to decide what area you are most interested in.

I am fairly sure this is used in American English but not in British English, because Americans have a different system for university. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, it means decided and (I think) officially told the university.

I was about to write that I`d never heard the word used in this context, as I chose my major more than 50 years ago. So it was interesting to see Munch`s links to UC San Diego and the College Board. Times do change.
