[Grammar] "despite the scientist’s protest, who have complained" Is it correct?

There are many scientists.

Would you be so kind as to tell me, what is the correct form?

If there is more than one scientist, it should be "scientists'".

I would change the word order:

It closed despite the protest by the scientists, who have complained that they had a finding and the study should continue.

Did they actually protest or did the just object? They had a finding doesn't sound very convincing to me- did they have a result?

The scientists just objected. It was not an actually protest.
They have a result, but for safety reason the authorities closed it.
