Would it be OK to use the term 'principal' to refer to the head of an institution of higher learning or would it be safer to use 'director'? Here is some of the context: "The Bestuzhev Courses in Saint Petersburg [was] the largest and most prominent women's higher education institution in Imperial Russia. The institute opened its doors in 1878. It was named after Konstantin Bestuzhev-Ryumin, [its] first director" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestuzhev_Courses). Here they use the term 'director'.
