Please read my reply again. I made it very clear (I thought) that "Due to the reason ..." is incorrect. That's the important bit of the post. We can worry about the tense later, but please show that you understand that "Due to the reason" is incorrect.

Yes, you can use "is."

Joe is not in school today because he is sick.
Joe did not go to school today because he is sick.


But I hope you did not mean that you would use "Due to the reason he is sick."

I meant to write the above sentence. But I notice that you use 'because', which is better than the wordy "Due to the fact..." in my opinion.

I understand clearly the 'Due to the reason', as you pointed out, is wrong. However, I wanted to make sure that apart from that, the 'is' I used is correct. If it is not, I will use 'was' as indicated in your sentence.
