What is the difference between educe and develop?

The first dictionary I looked at told me that 'educe' is 'rare'.

I'd never heard of it before and expect never to hear it again.

Another link.

How does it sound in this sentence to you?

Lastly there is the element of paranoia educed by the fact that the people are watching you.

It sounds like the writer used the wrong word.

I see. With what another word would you replace it? "Develop"?

No — not even 'developed'.

'Caused' or 'brought about'.

I am not a teacher.

In the sentence in post #3 you could replace it by induced.
