Hello everybody!

I would like to ask you one engine-relatred question.

The text regarding the engine is as follows:

All pumps are to be assembled with new plunger/ barrel, erosion plugs and sealing material.

To tell you the truth, the question is about the fuel injection pumps.

I asked my fellow workers what the erosion plugs meant. They gave me a strange look.

Maybe this text will help.

The jerk type fuel pumps as fitted to the majority of marine diesel engines are often fitted with erosion plugs in the casing opposite the spill ports in the barrel. These erosion plugs are replaceable once they erode due to the velocity of the fuel as it spills back at the end of injection.

You seem to have answered your own question. The erosion plugs are designed to wear away (erode) due to the action of the fuel. They are sacrificial parts. They are replaced as part of normal service. If they didn't exist, the body of the pump would itself wear away.
