I am unsure which is correct - I or me?

Everyone, except me/I, is going for the fair.

'me' sounds better to me, but I do not know which is correct. I thought I should use a subject pronoun 'I' in that position instead of an object pronoun, 'me'.

Where am I missing it?

Thank you.

The word 'except' is a preposition, and what follows a preposition? An object pronoun, that's what.

In this case, my understanding is that with the preposition 'except', the pattern goes like this: 'noun (subject).... except noun (object)'

Is my understanding correct? If it's wrong, kindly help me understand.

How about 'Everyone went to the fair, except Reuben'. In this sentence, Reuben is an object (noun)?

Thank you.

Any word after except is an object.
