Both 'since' and 'from' refer to a point of time in the past. But, can I use both the words correctly in the sentences below?

1) It has been their custom to shelter a stranger since time immemorial.

2) It has been their custom to shelter a stranger from time immemorial.

Sentence (2) needs "to/until now/the present" to be equivalent to (1), in my opinion. The following two sentences are equivalent in meaning:

3a) It has, since time immemorial, been their custom to shelter a stranger.
3b) It has, from time immemorial to the present, been their custom to shelter a stranger.

Sorry, I don't follow. I just mean we need some complete sentences in order to see the use and meaning. No one is saying that both phrases aren't used.
