Just before I got into/in/on/onto the bus, I gave him a call.

Are all four prepositions correctly used with the word 'bus' in this sentence?

Is it because a bus is big enough for one to stand on but a car is so small that one can only sit in it?

No. Generally people don't stand in a helicopter but we say "I got in the helicopter".

This topic has been discussed before and we keep coming to the conclusion that there is no hard and fast rule about the preposition which goes with a particular form of transport.
