Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

Besides, this place gives me the pip. It’s half dead – and I’m not going to die with it, thank you.
to get the pip: become depressed, despondent, or unwell

to give a person the pip: to annoy or irritate; to make angry, bad-tempered, or dispirited.

give somebody the pip = arouse unfriendliness into somebody

Thanks for your efforts.

Regard,

V

It's a little different from just becoming depressed: If a place or a person "gives you the pip", it annoys you too.
