The house had been empty for ages VS. The house was empty for ages.

I think both are saying the same meaning. What do you native English speakers think and feel about it? Thank you so much as usual.

We've had lots of questions about the past perfect tense lately. We don't use the past perfect tense if we are only referring to one event in the past.
"The house had been empty for ages." How many events does this refer to? Does it refer to two events in the past, one occurring before the other, and both being in some way logically linked?
