Hi there, can anyone please say me "have just been there" or "just was there", which one I should use in the context?

Mom: Subha, I told you yeseterday to go to your aunty's house. Have you gone there yet?

Me: Yes, I have just been there/was just there. I am now returning back home.

Hi i think present perfect is correct here but past tense is also possible as I have seen 'just' is used with simple past tense too in american english.

[STRIKE]Hi[/STRIKE] I think the present perfect is correct here but that the past tense is also possible as I have seen 'just' [STRIKE]is[/STRIKE] used with the simple past [STRIKE]tense[/STRIKE] too in American English.

Part of the problem is that the question is unnatural. We would say "Have you been there yet?" I would say "I've just been there" but you're right that AmE uses "I was just there" too. We wouldn't say "I am now returning back home" though. If I was on my way home from my aunt's house, I would expect this dialogue:

Mum: I told you to go to your aunt's house. Have you been [there] yet?
Me: I'm just on my way back [from her house] now!
