[Grammar] He admitted to stealing/having stolen the car

I've got a sentence:
"Yes, I stole the car," he said.

When I change it into reported speech, are both versions correct:
1. He admitted to having stolen the car.
2. He admitted to stealing the car.

Yes, they are, but #2 is by far the more colloquial way of saying it.

I'd also say that 1. is the reported version of "Yes, I had stolen the car."
