"He knew he was in no condition to control his tears that is why he did not come with

Hello all,

Could someone please let me know if there is a way to say the below sentence using a modal verb?

"He knew he was in no condition to control his tears that is why he did not come with us for/to dinner".

May be something like the following sentence.

"May be he knew he couldn't/wouldn't have been able to control his tears that's why he didn't come to dinner with us".

Thank you.

I'd write He knew he couldn't control his tears. That's why he didn't come to dinner with us.
