"Hearing is among the first abilities humans acquire but the last we lose."

How can I improve the sentence above?

Perhaps:

Of all the senses, the sense of hearing is the most developed at birth. It's also the last we lose.

Of all the senses, the sense of hearing is the most developed at birth. It's also the last we lose.
But it's not acquired at birth.

How about:
The sense of hearing is among the first that humans acquire and the last to lose?

Perhaps:

People are born deaf, but the sense of hearing is nonetheless one of the most developed at birth.

Babies can hear long before they are born.

Given that many people become deaf as they grow older, I'd say it was one of the first faculties we lose.

eeshu. I've changed your thread title. Titles must include some or all of the words or phrases you're asking about.

I think the original is trying to get at the fact that most medical professionals believe that, even when a person is in the final stages of dying, they can still hear what's going on around them. It's supposedly the last sense to go before death.
