hold/host the Olympic Games

The following sentence is taken from a book. Can or should we use 'host' in place of 'hold'? Many thanks in advance.

These were considered crucial to prove to the Olympic Committee the capability of Athens to hold the Olympic Games in the year 2004.
 
In this context, I see no difference.
 
I'd use "host". The International Olympic Committee holds (organises) the games in a host city.

Good point, but many wouldn't be that precise- I would have used either until I read your post.
