[Grammar] how are we doing for time

what does it mean by "how are we doing for time"?

does it equal "what time is it"

if so, how does it equal

I simply don't understand it.

could anybody please help explain it to me?
 
It means, "How much time have we left? / Are we pressed for time?"
 
Or "are we progressing on schedule?"
