Maybe this question already exists, but I tried doing a search on the forums and got 0 results, also tried advanced search and I don't have permission to use that functionality. So I created another thread.
Please help me I was trying to help my girlfriend with some very basic English questions using how far but I realized that I couldn't explain it properly and answer all her questions and maybe I have some concepts wrong in this area and I don't want to confuse her.
My problem is which of these questions are correct and I need to know if my interpretation is correct.
1.- How far the supermarket is from your house?
Question to know the distance, either an approximation or the exact distance, to the supermarket from her house.
2.- How far away is the supermarket from your house?
Question to know an approximation of the distance to the supermarket from her house.
3.- How far is your house?
Question to know the distance, either an approximation or the exact distance, to her house from the place we are currently at.
4.- How far is it to your house?
Same as the previous one.
5.- How far is the supermarket?
Question to know the distance, either an approximation or the exact distance, to the supermarket from the place wer are currently at.
6.- How far the supermarket is?
(Correct?) Same as the previous one.
I am also wondering what's the difference between 3 and 4? Is there any? Also I don't really know when to use away properly in this kind of situations.
It is funny how we can fool ourselves into beliving that we know something very well just because we use it every day. But when we are faced with the problem of trying to explain it and putting it into words, we discover that we really don't know it that well.
Please feel free to correct any other error you find in this post.
Thanks in advance.
