Is the phrase "how important English is" used correctly in the sentence below?

When I was looking for a job and got a lot of interviews to get through, I realized then how important English is.

Hi,

At first you should cross out that then and say instead:
When I was looking for a job and got a lot of interviews to get through, I realized [STRIKE]then[/STRIKE] how important English is.
Then your sentence is correct.

But it could be even a little better if you changed it to:

When I was looking for a job and went through a lot of interviews, I realized how important English is.

Only when I was looking for a job and went through a lot of interviews, did I realize how important English is.

When I was looking for a job I had a lot of interviews to get through. Only then I realized how important English is.

If you want, it is also possible to change the final is to was.

These are just some suggestions.
