Hi,

I have a doubt about asking the total cost of things or groceries at a checkout. Let's say I buy a quantity of items such as cereal, canned foods, and a detergent. What should I say to a cashier? 'How much is it or how much are all of these'? What do you usually say?

Do you have to say anything when you put your groceries at a cashier counter?
However, if you want to say something, I think "How much?" would suffice.

sebayanpendam, where you live, doesn't the cashier tell you how much the total comes to without your having to ask when they've finished adding up the prices of your goods in the cash register? Can't you see the total on the register's screen?

Whether you can see the total figure or not, the cashier has just one job at the end of putting your goods through the till - to tell you how much you owe! There is no need to ask anything. OK, perhaps if the cashier stood there for ten seconds without saying the amount, I might be forced to say "And how much does that come to?" to see if I could nudge them into doing their job.

(In reality, if they didn't tell me the total and I couldn't see it for myself, I'd pick up my goods and say "Great! They must be free!" then make as if to walk out. I'm pretty sure they'd tell me how much I owed then!)

In Asia. In a rural area where the internet service and electricity are lacking. Cashiers often use a calculator.

Note my changes above.
