How to use the word "toward"

Hi,

Are both the following sentences correct?

He moved it toward the light.
He moved it towards the light.

Yes. I seem to recall from a couple of previous threads that "towards" is used more in BrE than in AmE.

That's what we were told at the college where I study. It also applies to word pairs such as (afterwards, afterward), (round, around), (forwards, forward) -- that's just off the top of my head. It might not be true though, since the teachers on this forum have denied a few times what they taught as at the Department of Linguistics.

The round/around claim has never convinced me. ;-)
