Is it possible to say that? "I am making the food" (for having lunch or dinner...)

No. Say 'I'm cooking lunch/dinner'.

If no cooking is involved, say 'I'm making lunch/dinner'.

I'm making the food for the picnic.
I'm making the food for the dinner party tonight.

I would say "I'm making dinner/lunch" whether it was cooked or not.

No one has suggested "I'm preparing..." Is this only heard in AmE?

It's fine in BrE.
