I went to bed late.I'm a little confused. Do you mean you went to bed late or that you got up late?
Both are wrong. Is it correct to say "I got late to sleep today" or "I got late in sleeping today"?
Okay, the only thing I can say is "I went to the bed late last night". Am I correct? Both are wrong.
Omit 'the'.Okay, the only thing I can say is "I went tothebed late last night". Am I correct?
The meaning of that is not clear.I'd say, "I slept late last night".
I'd say no comma here "I slept late last night". There was nomentionnmentionaboutof bed in the first post.
What is not clear? The meaning of that is not clear.
The meaning, as 5jj indicated. What is not clear?
Okay, slept late means you slept later than usual and went to sleep late means it took you some time to fall off to sleep. Am I correct? The meaning, as 5jj indicated.
It could mean that the person went to sleep last night at a time they consider to be late. It could also mean that the person went to sleep at 3pm, intending to sleep until, say, 9pm but then didn't wake up until 11pm. In the latter case, they could be a shift worker, for instance.
There is a difference between "slept late" and "went to sleep late".
As I said before, and emsr2d2 confirmed, the meaning is not clear.Okay, slept late means you slept later than usual
Not necessarily.and went to sleep late means it took you some time to fall off to sleep. Am I correct?
The "later than usual" part applies to both.Okay, slept late means you slept later than usual and went to sleep late means it took you some time to fall off to sleep. Am I correct?
No.... "went to sleep late" means it took you some time to fall off to sleep. Am I correct?
How would you express OP's original idea then? The meaning, as 5jj indicated.

Provided tufguy understands the difference between the various terms we've explained in this thread, I'd use exactly what he said in post #3 - "I went to bed late last night". If the word "sleep" was particularly relevant at the time he wrote #1, I'd say "I fell asleep late last night".How would you express the OP's original idea then?
