Dear teachers,

I would like to know what the meaning of "before I got three feet" is in the following sentence:

"I stopped to go into a store but was drenched before I got three feet."

Thank you.

Presumably it was raining, he stopped and got out of the car but was drenched before he had moved a distance of three feet away from the car.

I would have said "before I'd gotten" (before I'd got) with the past perfect.

Three feet is nearly one metre, in case you're not familiar with imperial (pre-metric) measurements.

Twelve inches = one foot
Three feet = one yard

1 yard = 0.9144 metres

And, as you all know, 5½ yards = one pole, rod or perch.
