I'm not sure if I understand this phrase correctly. The context is this. Jerry Falwell, a Christian, conservative commentator called Ellen DeGeneres, a gay rights proponent, "Ellen DeGenerate". She replied,
Really, he called me that? Ellen DeGenerate? I've been getting that since the fourth grade. I guess I'm happy I could give him work.

I think she was ironically saying she was happy he had something to do thanks to her. But I'm not sure.

It could also imply that he's a bit slow and had to work to get to a pun that school-kids could make.
