I just dabbled slightly

I wrote this conversation. Did I use "dabble" correctly?

Lucy: What was your major?
Bob: Chinese.
Lucy: I presume you have a very good understanding of Chinese literature.
Bob: Not really. During university, I just dabbled slightly in literature because there were too many non-literature courses, such as, Chinese linguistics, communication, and Business Chinese. I do wish I were exposed to more classical literature that time.
 
Overall it's not too bad, but there are two small points. Dabble slightly is a bit redundant because dabble implies slightness. And "I were" seems to me an inapproriate use of the subjunctive. Better would be: if I had been exposed.
