Hi teachers,

I manipulate my husband. Is it correct to say when a wife who orders his husband and his husband does what she asks him to do?
Is there any other word that can be used in place of "manipulate"?

Many thanks.

'I have my husband under my thumb.'

I don't think "manipulate" is appropriate here. If she is ordering him to do something and he does it, she is bossy and he is compliant. "Manipulation" would be more sneaky than that. She would get him to do what she wanted using more underhand techniques.

You also said that she gives him orders but that he does what she asks him to do. Orders are not requests. You either order someone to do something or you ask them to do it. With an order, there is a suggestion that he has no option. With a request, he can choose to do it or not do it.

"Manipulation" is getting people to do what you want them to do by making them think they want to do it. Simply ordering someone is not manipulation.

In any case, wouldn't you need, "She manipulates her husband" if you're describing the wife?
There are some terms that you can use for other people that you wouldn't usually say about yourself.
