1) I went to greet my friend upon seeing him in a shopping mall.

2) There was a monkey in a mall and people started running out of fear upon seeing him.

Is it correct to say "upon seeing someone or something"? Or do we need to use "after" instead of "upon"?

I wouldn't use it in those sentences.

I saw my friend in a mall and went over to speak to him.
A monkey came into a mall and people started running away from it/people scattered.
It's obvious that people saw it (not "him", unless they waited to check before they ran away).

This usage of "upon" is usually in formal or official contexts. Upon completion of your probation period, your responsibilities may change.

Hi, @tufguy. Long time no see. In the time you've been away, you've obviously forgotten how to write a useful thread title. I've changed this one for you.

Hello EMS, how are you? No, I haven't forgotten it but I was a bit confused whether to use the entire sentence or just two words that this thread is I regard to.

Can we use "after" instead of "upon" if we have to?

@tufguy I might say, "When I saw my friend, I went over to talk to him."

How would you use "after" there?

Please use a complete sentence as your title.
