This is for the speaking practice. Please correct it and make it colloquial. My goal is Band 8.

Topic: Describe an old person that you know. (source)

You should say:
  • What your relationship is to this person
  • How often you see them
  • What people think about this person
Explain why you like them.

My response:

I'm going to talk about my mum. She's about 60 years old. We live together so I see her every day. I don't know what people think about my mum because I don't hang out with her friends, but my dad and brother think she's grumpy and paranoid. If anyone at home forgets to turn off the light, she'll tell them off fiercely. Sometimes, she thinks that there are ghosts in our home because she sees shadows in the hallway occasionally. However, her friends might think she's helpful because sometimes I hear she talk to her friends on phone and she always asks them if they need helps. Despite her bad temper, I still love her because she cares about me a lot. When I was sick a few months ago, she messaged my head every day until I recovered.

Why is it better to use “house”?

"House" is a more general word for the physical building you live in. "Home" is more personal and involves the people and daily activities inside. We usually say "a haunted house", not "a haunted home".

When you get to be my age you won't think 60 is old. 😊
