Which sentence below is correct and why?

"If you didn't study English at school, you won't understand this book."

"If you hadn't studied English at school, you wouldn't understand this book."

The first one. Because I say so.
:)

As for the second one, it makes no sense to me.

Isn't the second a mixed type conditional?

It's mixed up if that's what you mean.
;-)

Perhaps:

If you hadn't studied English at school you wouldn't have understood this book.

It's not completely clear what you mean but I think you mean this:

If you hadn't learnt English at school, you wouldn't be able to understand this book.

(Yes, that's a mixed conditional.)

I clicked Thank for this post.

Somebody needed to — ringu hasn't given a single Thank after receiving replies to over 60 posts!

Why do we bother?

I'm pretty sure I haven't bothered yet. Once I'd noticed that ringu had not hit "Thank" for a single post, I decided not to spend any of my precious time on him/her.

Maybe it's a cultural thing. Sigh.
