Hello.

This screenshot is from the book Conversation Gambits by Eric Keller. It says ''If you go though a switchboard, say first:''... Does it suggest using the phrase ''I would like to talk to somebody about''? It's in the first screenshot.2.jpg3.PNG

Yes. If you know you're ringing the person you need to talk to, you can go straight in with your question/request. If you ring a switchboard and a receptionist needs to transfer your call to the relevant person, start with "I would like to talk to somebody about ...". The receptionist will know who to put you through to. Once you're speaking to the right person, you go straight in with your question/request.

Receptionist: Hello. You've reached Stanmer Convention Centre. This is Julie speaking. How can I help you?
Caller: I'd like to talk to somebody about hiring the centre for an exhibition.
Receptionist: I'll put you through to Bookings.
Caller: Thank you.
[Call is transferred]
Bookings Manager: Hello. This is Joe from Bookings. What can I do for you
Caller: I'd like to hire the centre for an exhibition in February next year.
Bookings Manager: OK. Let me check the diary ...
