hi everyone,
in the sentence ' I'll close my computer when I'm done', why is here used I'm done and not I've done?
thanks to all in advance

If you said "when I have done" the question would be "when you have done what?"

Hi, everyone,

In the sentence "I'll close my computer when I'm done," why is "I'm done" used here and not "I've done"?

T
hanks to all in advance.

Good question!

First, remember: In text messages and telegrams, it's fine to ignore capitalization and punctuation. In other forms of writing, it's not.

Both I'm and I've would be understood. But you're right, "I'm done" is more common and more natural.

Think about what the phrase means when it stands alone:

- I am done.
- I am finished.
- I am not using it anymore.

They grow out of the verb to be. As you have learned, we often follow the be verbs (be, been, is, am, was, are, were) with more verbs. This is an example of that.

You're welcome!

I'm puzzled, Elisa.

Your earlier thread Could someone help me with this short text? contains very few mistakes and showed that you have a really good command of the language — especially of punctuation and capitalisation.

This, your latest post, seems to have been written by a different person.

Hi Rover,
I have a degree in foreign languages but I haven't spoken English for a long time so it is getting worse and I need to brush it up. You are right, in my last post I did a lot of mistakes, especially in capitalization and punctuation. I should be less distracted. So sorry
Elisa

Change "I did a lot of mistakes" to "I made a lot of mistakes".
