Which of the two prepositions is more appropriate? And is there any difference in meaning between the two sentences?

They both work.
Maybe "I'm sorry for the mess" has a suggestion of "I'm sorry for making the mess". If you didn't make the mess, but invited someone into it, you might use "about". But that's a subtle distinction.
