Hi friends:

I am reading an internal corporate article about Process Standardization. There is one paragraph like this:

Without process standardization there can be no improvement. How can you improve where you are going, if you don’t know where you are starting from?

What does "improve where you are going" specifically mean? Is it about the direction you choose? Or improve related issues in the upcoming tasks? Or something eles?

Thanks!

It's a metaphor, and not a great one. You can't improve your process unless you know what your process is. You can't guarantee you will get where you want to go if you don't know where you are right now.

Thanks a lot!

Your first guess is right. It is about the direction you choose.

But it really doesn't make sense as written. The writer was probably trying to say: How can you choose a direction if you don't know where you are?
