[Grammar] "in" before "the previous year"

Are there any difference in meaning between the following sentences?

1. He had no income the previous year.
2. He had no income in the previous year.
 
They seem the same to me.
 
[STRIKE]Are [/STRIKE] Is there any difference in meaning between the following sentences? Unless you would ask, "Are there any differences etc."

1. He had no income the previous year.
2. He had no income in the previous year.

No difference between 1 & 2.
