What is the difference between "in the street" and "on the street"?

There are differences in how these phrases are used in the US and in other places.

American usage:
We live "on" a street, not "in" a street.

Children, it's not safe to play "in" the street! (That's where the cars go.)

If you live "on the streets" you are homeless.

In BrE we tend to live "in" streets. Like Americans, we are homeless if we live "on the streets"
