[Grammar] In (the) light of (the) recent events

I've seen this expression used a lot of times in various article combinations. Which articles are necessary and which are not?

In (the) light of (the) recent events, I regret to inform that the ceremony has been canceled.

Both are possible. I prefer it without "the".

If you're referring to specific/known/previously mentioned events, use "the".

I find the start much more natural with no articles. I expect to read/hear "In light of recent events ...". If everyone is very clear on which events are being referenced, I might use "In light of the recent [tragic] events ...", but I wouldn't use "In the light of ...".
