I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

In the previous centuries, many expeditions went into the unknown with great expectations only to meet a grim fate.
 
If you're counting back from now, I'd use In previous centuries.
 
The Antarctic expeditions come to mind.

The first definite article is only justified if you've already been discussing specific centuries.
