I don’t quite understand what the phrase “in this way” mean in this sentence. Could you paraphrase it for me?

It means 'by specifying the meaning relationship which the word implies'.
 
Does the way in "in this way" refer to "the ways" after the verb "examine"?
 
No. Usually, when you see in this way, it refers back to the content of the previous sentence, as it does here.
 
Could I take “in this way” to mean “using this definition”, the definition of COMPLEMENTATION?
