Hi,
When something affects something or someone they will change in some way. It seems to me that influence has more of a long-lasting effect on the way someone thinks or something develops.

Hope others will comment on this.

"Affect" is the general word. To influence is to affect in a particular way, to subtly contribute motivation in a particular direction.
