Is it okay to use "Mother Nature" in a formal or a semi-formal essay or is it used mainly humorously or in news reports?

Is this sentence okay for a formal essay for example?

The projects they have conducted so far exhibits their inherent love for Mother Nature as they make sure their carbon footprint is very low.

I wouldn't say it's particularly appropriate for a formal essay but it's definitely not only used humorously. Many people use it perfectly seriously when talking about nature.

I would say their carbon footprint is very small.*

*If I was going to say that.

I wouldn't use love for Mother Nature in a formal essay. I'd say something like respect for the environment. You could also use ensure instead of make sure.

You're talking about an IELTS Academic essay, right?
